Issue #20

June 2007

Greetings!

Today I would like to talk with you about the power of positive thoughts.

My mother used to say "Count your blessings, Denise" when I was playing the role of the misunderstood, unappreciated, spoiled child. I didn't like this. It was not the response I wished to receive. I recall feeling so angry with her! Now when there was a valid concern, my mother would be there to care for me but she knew the difference between the expression of my real needs and my manipulative, pouting demeanor designed to seek attention in an unhealthy way. She was on to me! So, "count your blessings" she'd repeat and I would stomp off to brood about how unfair and cruel this world could be and about how I personally had been targeted to have a miserable life. (I admit I was a bit melodramatic at times. Some would say I still am from time to time.)

Now I can't help but smile and appreciate the wisdom of Mom's mandate to be grateful. It was not welcomed at the time but now I recognize the immense value of my mother's words. We all have "down" times and it is hard to keep our vibrational energy high and positive. Being grateful however can transform negative situations and feelings into positive ones. This shifting of our focus from negative to positive is vital to stopping binging behavior and this is why:

We now know that like attracts like. This is the Universal Law of Attraction and is indisputable. Today we hear of this law through books such as The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. This wonderful little book is a compilation of writings by some of the greatest thinkers of our past and present time - Einstein, Edison, Plato, Buddha, Alexander Graham Bell and Jack Canfield to name a few. What is remarkable is that all of these masters are delivering the same message. All agree that The Universal Law of Attraction exists and that we attract to ourselves that which we focus our attention on. When we focus on the negative, we are affected in many ways. We attract more negative thoughts to ourselves and usually reach for unhealthy foods to ward off these negative emotions. We then feel unhappy and disappointed in ourselves and feel worse, leading, of course, to stronger urges to self medicate to get rid of the very feelings we are creating.

Before I tell you more, however, I want to acquaint you with Abraham-Hicks, a second amazing, life- transforming resource. Abraham is a group, not a single entity, of spirit guides who speak to us through a woman named Esther Hicks. If you have not personally experienced or heard of channeling in the past, you are most likely skeptical, as well you should be. But I encourage you to keep an open mind and to visit www.abraham-hicks.com to investigate the phenomenon of Abraham's teachings for yourself. Then see what you think. If they have no value for you, that is fine. Move on. However, for thousands of people these teachings are helping them to transform their lives from negative, painful ones to lives filled with balance and joy. For many they reveal a path from the insanity and frustration of failed weight loss efforts to one of quiet positive progress in a healthy direction.

Now for some, this talk of spirit guides may be a stretch but, if you are open to the idea of spiritual guidance, as I am, this will propel you along your journey. What is so wonderful to me is that the messages of Abraham also match the messages of the great thinker's quoted in Ms. Byrnes book, The Secret (www.thesecret.tv.com) . The message, or secret, once again is that in our universe like attracts like. What you think about is what you draw into your life.

Not to be redundant but it bears repeating that what we think about is what we attract. So, if we are thinking "I am fat and I need to lose weight" the universe hears that and keeps us in a state of feeling fat and needing to lose weight (which we have not seemed to be able to lose in the past, despite all our most sincere efforts). When we give thought to something, we invite it into our life. So, could weight loss be really as simple as changing our thought patterns? Yes, I believe it can, and in fact I believe weight loss is impossible without shifting our thought to a positive vibration whenever possible.

So, how can you use this wonderful information to your best advantage? You can begin by ceasing to beat yourself up, it never helps. As I emphasize so strongly in The Taming of the Chew, instead of putting yourself down or punishing yourself for so-called bad overeating behavior, focus on the positive things about your body. Think about how fortunate you are that your body can serve you in the marvelous ways that it does. Appreciate yourself! Think of joyful things and have more fun. Any positive, happy thoughts will raise your positive vibration and enable you to transform not just your physical body but your life.

The effects of positive thinking are powerful and magical. Of course there is much to know about the Universal Law of Attraction that can help you - much, much more than I could possibly share in this brief newsletter. So, please do visit the websites above and read and listen for yourself. I think you will be most pleasantly surprised. Invite more joy, balance, and peace into your life. You deserve this!

And... Great news. by next month the CD set, "Hidden Weight Gain Factors" will be available in my store as well as on Ann Louise Gittleman's website. There are so many hidden physical and emotional factors that prevent us from losing weight and then maintaining any weight loss we do achieve. This set is a MUST to help you understand and make the adjustments you need to make to acheive your personal health and weight loss goals. I will let you know when the first sets are ready to ship.

Meanwhile, have a healthy and fantastic season.

warmest wishes,

Dr. Denise
